Boss's line of compact pedals began in 1977 with the release of six pedals, all of them discontinued: an overdrive pedal (OD-1), a phaser pedal (PH-1), a parametric equalizer called the Spectrum (SP-1), a 6-band graphic equalizer (GE-6), a compressor pedal (CS-1) and an automatic wah pedal (TW-1).

As with anything created by Boss, it’s built to last and their 5-year manufacturer’s warranty demonstrates this. Similar to the previous pedals that we’ve looked at, it includes a built-in crossover function to help avoid low-end frequency issues, in turn helping to maintain clarity. The Boss DS-1’s set-up is simple: level, tone and distortion, with a rubber-topped foot-pedal to switch it on and off. The pedal is happy adding a little crunch, some extra oomph, but it keeps the integrity of your guitar tone steady when dimed. There’s plenty of versatility. Boss has been one of the big boys in the individual pedal market for years, so it only makes sense that they would branch out and take their experience into the bass multi effects pedal market. And with the ME-50B, I’m certainly glad they did.
